作名词,表示“平均”
(1) 表示“平均”、“平均数”。
eg:The average of 2,4 and 6 is 4.
2,4,6的平均数是4。
(2) 表示“平均水平”、“一般水准”。
eg:These marks are above/below average.
这些分数在平均分数之上/下。
(3) 用于on average意为“按平均值”,“通常”。
eg:On average he works eight hours a day.
他平均一天工作八小时。
He smokes 20 cigarettes a day on average.
他平均一天要抽20支烟。
用作形容词,也有两个主要意思:
(1)表示“平均的”,通常只用作定语。
eg:The average age of these students is 20.

(2)表示“一般的”、“普通的”,可用作定语也可用作表语。如:It is just an average dictionary.
